Britain’s national media supported us well at the the recent Weston Poster Show, and as a result the review reports are giving us critical acclaim.  The article below written by respected journalist Geoff Courtney, includes comments from guests and delegates as well as giving facts and figures about this unique event in railway circles.  It seems everybody who came enjoyed the show and for us, it is the icing on top of a very successful book project.HR1414 article

The show is over and the posters are packed away, but what a weekend it was !  Nearly a thousand people came to see us and several hundred pounds were raised for charity.  Richard was interviewed by the BBC and this went out on Saturday evening 15th November on Points West.  As a result we were busy the next day. Below is a photo of the completed exhibition just before we opened.  The central display was completely surrounded by two tiers of posters: a breathtaking effect!

We also had a video made of the exhibition and by clicking on the link below you can take your own tour.

Now that the travel part around the UK has been completed with the publication of Volume 7 the series was the subject of a feature in the latest edition of Heritage Railway Magazine.  Correspondent Geoff Courtney featured our work and hailed the project as a major publishing success.  It is particularly satisfying that our books have again been nationally acclaimed as the definitive work.  Click on the image below to read the full article.Heritage Rail Article

Volume 7 has arrived!!

Posted by: Andy Smith – Date: Thursday, May 8, 2014

After much hard work and real anticipation, Volume 7 has just arrived from the printers.    We are busy working through all the pre-orders, with the oldest being sent out first:  in a day of so the overseas orders will follow.    We also have large orders from the trade, so as of today almost a third of the print run has already been sold or committed.

It is a quite glorious book befitting the title very well.  The binders in Edinburgh (Charles Letts and Co) have produced a superb volume, with the printed pages by the Amadeus Press in Yorkshire making this a piece of work we are very proud to say is totally British.    It is packed with over 400 posters from Somerset, Wiltshire, Dorset, Devon, Cornwall and the Channel Islands, an area that is the the epitome of holiday nostalgia and romance.     The book is a cracker!!     Below, Judi and I had a picture of us taken by the site manager of us holding the new book: behind is a fine array of south-west area posters that adorn the office walls.

Friday of last week saw Volume 7 – The South West finally sent to press!  We spent 2 days on final colour balancing and the last tweaks so now we are very happy with what has turned out to be a large and very colourful book.  In the end we included 401  images, the largest of any volume in the series.  Printing will take place this month and into early April and we have been told to expect the finished product around May 7th.  For those that have pre-ordered we will hopefully be dispatching your copies later that week.  The formal launch of this eagerly awaited book will take place at the Pershore Railwayana Auction on Saturday May 17th.

As our work is now complete for the next few weeks we are taking the opportunity of 2 weeks in the sun, so JDF offices will be closed from 18th March  to April 3rd.  We will have very limited access to email but will try to answer all urgent messages.

Richard has now completed the drafting of Volume 7 and it is away being proof read and checked.  We are therefore planning to go to Yorkshire in 4 weeks to sign the book off and send it away for production.  It has turned out to be a large and quite beautiful book, with 400 illustrations inside, the largest of the series.  Printing takes place next month and we hope to have the finished book towards the end of April.  Those of you who have pre-ordered will receive your copies before the book goes on general release.

With the completion of book 7 we will be in a position to offer numbered limited edition complete sets.  The first books from each of the print runs were all hand numbered and the sets we now offer will have matching numbers.  With Volume 2 (Yorkshire) out of print and Volumes 3 & 6 about to go out of print this is the final opportunity to collect all first edition volumes.  These sets are offered on a first come, first served basis at £495 + £5 p/p.  The picture above shows the complete set with Volume 7 displaying a marvellous Torquay poster.

We were surprised but absolutely delighted to see Nick Higham’s Literary Review of The Year 2013 broadcast over the Christmas holidays.  In this programme our Volume 6 was included alongside Booker Prize winners past and present, critically acclaimed authors and other notable publications during last year.  Our books were held up as the example of a coffee table book that would not work as an eBook.  To have been recognized at national level is testament to our hard work and commitment to quality over more than a decade.

It was broadcast a total of seven times, two of which were on Christmas Day.  Details can be found at  The publicity we have received from the BBC has meant that Volume 6 will shortly go out of print.
